Chapter One: Math Poems

Quotative division is easy to do,
for example the numbers six and two,
How many times does two go into six?
The answer is three (its as easy as cake-mix).
Make six into two equal groups,
If you said the answer is two, (oops)
The right answer is actually three
Now get it right, or you'll get stung by a bee.


Chapter two

Mr. Guy: Oh my, you look like a really sad clown. What's wrong?
Mr. Clown: Well you see, I was walking home from clown school and these two kids were laughing. They called me all sorts of things, but the one that got me the most is when they called me dumb. They told me that I couldn't do algebra!
Mr Guy: Mr. Clown, don't feel sad. Kids used to say that to me too, but when i grew up I became a teacher. That showed them!
Mr Clown: If you're a teacher, would you mind helping me slove these two algebra questions?
Mr. Guy: Of course I will, Mr. Clown. What are the two questions?
Mr. Clown: The first one is n+3-5n+12.
Mr. Guy: Easy peasy! The answer to that is -6n+15.
Mr Clown: Oh, but how do you know? What were the steps?
Mr. Guy:Well first of all, I did my grouping. That is when you combine like terms. For this equation, the like terms were -5n+n. Always remember that an "n" by itself always equals 1. So in this case, the answer to combining those like terms is -6n.
Mr. Clown: Hm, I get it! Well, sort of. Go on, Mr. Guy.
Mr. Guy: The same goes for the second part. We must combine like terms again. in the second part of the question, we are adding the numbers with no letter signs. That means we are adding +3+12. The answer to that is +15. That's how we get -6+n+15. Simple right?
Mr. Clown: Yes! I get it! But I don't think that my second question will not be as easy! It has brackets.
Mr. Guy: Don't worry. What's the question?
Mr. Clown: This question is 2+4(3n+8). Not as easy, huh?
Mr. Guy: Well easy enough! The answer is 12n+10!
Mr. Clown: Oh no, Mr. Guy. That doesn't look right. I think you're supposed to multiply 4 and 8, not add 8 and 2. It just doesn't look right the way you're doing it.
Mr. Guy:I thought you didn't know how to do algebra?
Mr. Clown: What? OH, i guess i just remembered from my years in normal school.
Mr. Guy:Well, Mr. Clown. The answer is 12n+34. You did good, now put a smile on your face!
Mr. Clown: Thanks , Mr. Guy! But about the smile part. I dont think i could do that, because this is the way my face is painted!

Philip:well then maybe I can help. Whats the question?
Dwight:I doubt it but you can give it a shot if you like.
Philip:Sure!
Dwight: n+3-5n+1 , I can't figure it out!
Philip:Okay, so first, what do you think the awnser is?
Dwight: I keep getting -6n+15 but I don't know if it is right!
Philip: hhmm. That does not seem right. Let me check.....Okay!
Dwight: you got the awnser!?
Philip: yup! Well to start your awsner was wrong! the awnser is -4n+4.. Now let me show you how I got that. First you would rewrite the question and combine the like terms like so
"-5n+n+3+1" then you simplify! so you will end up with this "-4n+4" .
Dwight: Oh! now I see. Thanks Philip!
Philip: no problemo. See you later Dwight!
Dwight: Wait! . uhhmm Philip?
Philip:Yes Dwight?
Dwight: Uhhhmm.... coudl you help me with another one?

Philip:you see . what you were doing was ading 2 and 8. What you have to do its times 4 and 3 and you get 12n. and then times 4 and 8 and you get 32. so then you take the 2 and add it to 32. so you will end up with 12n+32. see!

Well get back to that later, now we multiply 4 and 8 which equals 24 and then we add the 2 in the beginning so the answer we should get is 12n + 26

Combining Like Terms & the Distributive Property

Moe: Lester, I think you did the math homework wrong. You said that n +3 -5n +12 is -4n +15. I think you are wrong.
Lester: Well Moe, why do you figure that?
Moe: Well, I got a different answer. This is how I did it. The question said n +3 -5n +12, right? So I put the like terms together. The n with the 5n and the 3 with the 12. That gave me 6n+15.
Lester: I still think you're wrong.
Moe: Why?
Lester: Well, when you added the n's, you forgot that the first n was a positive.
Moe: Oh.
Lester: Yeah. So instead of n +3 -5n +12 being 6n +15, its actually -4n +15.
Moe: Okay. So I guess I did 2 +4(3n +8) wrong.
Lester: Show me how you did it.
Moe: Okay. So 2 +4 times 3n plus eight. I multiplied first and got 12n then it was 2 +8 which is ten. So I have 2 +4(3n +8) equals 12n +10.
Lester: Yeah you did this wrong. In distributive property you have to multiply everything in the brackets not just the first one. What you did was multiply the first one and not 8.
Moe: Oh man!
Lester: It's okay. So if you do it properly, you will get 2 +4(3n +8) equals 2 +12n +32. And from there you will get 12n + 34.
Moe: Oh I see. Thanks a lot Lester.

The step in this equation is to isolate the variable. You can do that by adding the opposite of the constant with the variable.

Important step: add the opposite. Once you do that, its basically just like a additive equation.

Multiplicative

Once again, isolate the variable. You do this by doing the opposite operation being done to the variable with the same number. In this case you must divide.

Mr. Fire: Hello Miss Hot. Well, I'm actually doing pretty good this year. I have a lot of crazy things happening.

Mrs. Hot:Oh. Well, we'll talk about it later. I heard you've been taking classes in mathematics. Tell me how is it?

Mr. Fire: It's actually been fun, I just started the lessons last Friday. Mr. Makutohomolo who's my math teacher , has been teaching me a lot of stuff I've never heard before and when he explained it i actually understand it.

Mrs. Hot:Well, I'm glad you understand it. Actually, Mr. Makutohomolo called earlier and he gave this show two questions for you to answer. Will it be okay if i ask u?

Mr. Fire: Wow. I think I can handle it sure u can ask.

Mrs. Hot: Okay. First question is n+3-5n+12. I looked at it earlier but then i couldn't find out the answers . It's too hard.

Mr. Fire: Well, this question is a combining like terms. This was the first lesson i learned from
Mr. Makutohomolo.

Mrs . Hot: So all we have to do is combine like terms.?

Mr. Fire: Yeah, that's it. But first, we have to group like terms.

Mrs. Hot: I think that's n-5n.

Mr. Fire: That's right . Now put the other numbers in that question.

Mrs. Hot: Okay, So it will be like n-5n+3+12. I think I can answer this. So the answer is -4n+15.

Mr. Fire: WOW That's right. Are you sure you haven't done this?

Mrs. Hot: Yea, I'm sure . But thanks to you I do now. There's another question Mr. Makutohomolo told me to ask you and explain it to me. The question is 2+4(3n+8).

Mr. Fire: This kind of question is about distributive property. This lesson was taught to me the second day of my classes with him. First, you have to multiply four by three n and by four by eight.

Mrs. Hot: I think that's 12n+32. Is that right?

Mr. Fire: Yeah. That is definitely right. Good Job. Now put the number 2 in it.

Mrs. Hot: So It will be like 12n+2+32. Now if i would answer this it will be 12n+34. Is that right?

Mr. Fire: Yeah. Good Job. Now you have something to tell your kids about distributive property and combining like terms.

Mrs. Hot: Well, thank you so much for coming here tonight and answer some questions. Maybe you can come back next time.

I group them and got the answer of n=-2.

Division equation
I isolated the 2 by multiplying the n by 2. Then on the other side i multiplied 10 by 2. That gives me 20. So, the answer is n=20.



Additive equation
I added a -2 since it was +2 and then i did the same thing at the other side. The answer is n=2



subtractive equation
Here I isolate the -2 by adding a +2. Then on the other side I added +2. That all makes n=6

Combining like terms and the Distributive Property

Jaylen: Hey! What are you doing ?
Lyn: Hi! Im just thinking about Combining like terms.
Jaylen: What is Combining like terms ?
Lyn: It is just math. An example is n+3 minus 5n+12
Jaylen: Wow that seems easy, the answer to that question is negative 6n+15
Lyn: How did you get that answer ? My answer was negative 4n + 15
Jaylen: First we have to look at the question and change all the minus signs into plus signs. Then we look for all the terms that are in the question. There are only two terms. 5n and n . 5n + n equals 6n. Don't forget to do the rest of the question. 3 plus 12 equals fifteen. So the answer is 6n plus 15.How did you get negative 4n plus 15 ?
Lyn: First I thought of all the terms. There is only two terms , n and negative 5n. You have to remember when you are adding terms wether there positive or negative the same rule applies. When you add a positive with a negative the zero pairs cancel each other out. You have n and negative 5n you add them together and you get negative 4n. The rest of the question is 12 plus 3 and that equals 15. So, my answer is negative 4n plus 15.
Jaylen: But you have to remember that we aren't always adding negative and positive terms. Just remember to change the negative signs into positive signs. It will help you a lot . 5n+n+12+3= 6n + 15
Lyn: Oh man, your right. Your strategy is really good, and your right it can help.
Jaylen: Don't worry everyone makes mistakes. Let's try another question. How about 2 + 4(3n+8).
Lyn: Okay let me think about this, and use your strategy. Okay the answer is12n+34
Jaylen: Really that's weird I got 12n+10 explain how you got your answer.
Lyn: first i multiplied 4 and 3n. I got 12n. Then i multiplied 4 and 8 and I got 32. Also, you have to add thirty-two and two and you get 34, so the answer is 12n+34
Jaylen: Oh yeah ! I forgot to multiply 4 and 8. My mistake, your answer it correct.
Lyn: We have to focus on our thinking so that we could be both great people at math.

Jimmy: Hey Sue, how are you today?
Sue: I am great!
Sue: I have a question for you
Jimmy: Shoot
Sue: Okay well its two questions from my math homework. I think I know the answers but I'm not to sure if they are right.The first question is n+3-5n+12 the answer I got for it was -6n+15. Is that correct?
Jimmy: Actually Sue that is the wrong answer. I'll show you how to get the right one. Well first you have to group the alike terms. So it would look like this n-5n+3+12. Then what you want to do is figure it out so the simplification would be -4n+15.
Sue: Oh I see how you got that!
Sue: Now for the next question. 2 + 4(3n+8). I think the answer is 12n + 10. Now that must be right.
Jimmy: No I'm sorry Sue that isn't right. I'll explain it again. This is called distributive property. First you have to multiply 3n by 4 and then 8 by 4. That gives you 2+12n+32. Next you have to group the alike terms. So it would look like this 12n+32+2. Finally figure what every thing equals put together and the simplification would be 12n+34.

Chapter Three



What I did first was I isolated the variable. I did this by dividing 3n by 3. To balance i had to do the same to the other side. That left me with n=2. The last step is to verify.



For this question I again started with the variable. I did this by subtracting five on both sides which also created balance. The answer i got was x=8. Then i ended with verifying.








I started off with isolating the variable. I did this by multiplying 7n by 7. I did the same thing to the other side. What I was left with was n=14. I then verified.








For this equation I started with isolating the variable. I did this by adding 11 to q-11. For balance I had to do the same thing on the other side. This left me with q=19. To finish it off I verified.

Hello to all the people watching our world wide news cast here in Seattle Beach. Today we have recived an important question coming from a math teacher coming all the way from Winnipeg, Manitoba. He has a question for all of us. This question he would like to ask us all is a math question which all of us know might be hard. The question is 3(a+4)=. Now this is a really tough one that I can't even think of getting. So we brought in a student from Seattle Beach University. Lets all welcome Kyle Lacap. Hello Kyle, will you help us do this question and teach the people of Seattle how to do this difficult question.


Kyle:
Hello there Steve and all the people of Seattle. This question here is a really tricky question. But I'll try to figure it out just for the people of Seattle. Well to me this question looks like a descriptive question. So I'll say that the answer is 12a because discriptive property tells me thats the answer.

Steve:
Oh i see, can you tell us all what this discriptive property is ? Is it some kind of law or rule?

Kyle:
Well Steve it is kind of a rule that people use. This descriptive property means a property indicating a special way in which multiplication is applied to addition of two or more numbers.

Steve:

Here we are again back at Seattle's live news. We're back here with Kyle and we're going to try to answer another question coming from China. The question is alot harder then the one we tried a while again. The question this time is 6x-(-3x)+2x-9. This is one of the hardest questions in the world , but we're here back with Kyle so he could try to answer it again. Welcome again Kyle what do you think the answer is to this difficult question.

Kyle:
Hey there Steve, i think the answer to this question is 11x-9 because i simplified it and then i got this answer. The way i got this was my simplifying the question so it would be easier to get the answer if there was an equal sign.

Steve:

the first question is n+3-5n+12

Amanda:Well first you group the variables
-5n + n which equals -4
Then you group the other numbers
3+12 which is 15 so the answer simplified is
-4+15

Abbie:oh noow i get it!ill try the next one so the question is 2+4(3n)
so first you multiply 4x3n =12n
then you do 4x8=32
Drop down the 2 and the answer is 2+12n+32!

Pratt's Integer Law (Free Verse)
When using the rule its not
all that tough, all you need to do is
to know your stuff. When there is an
even amount of negative integers it equals
positive as you can see, while when there is
an odd amount of negatives it equals negative, silly!
So use the rule when it comes to tests and then
you'll see who's the best!

Chapter 2- Combine like terms and The distributive Property
Script:

Peter: Hey bob what are you doing?

Bob:I'm just doing some algebra homework I got from school, and they seem very tough.

Peter:Would you like some help?

Bob:Sure I would like some help from you!

Bob:Okay the first one is n plus 3 subtract 5n plus 12 and I think the answer is negative 6n plus 15.

Peter:Well Bob that's the wrong answer because you didn't combine like terms, firstly find things that are the same like variable with the same variable, its like you add the n with another n which is n subtract 5n which gives you negative four n then you do the same thing with the integers, positive 3 plus positive 12 which equals positive 15 so the answer is really negative 4n plus 15.


Bob:
Oh, so that's how you combine like terms.

Peter:Yes, now about the other question that you were trying to explain?


Bob:
Oh yes, the other one it says 2+4 then in the bracket it says 3n+8. How do you do that? Plus I answered 12n+10.

Peter:Well what you just said was the Distributive Property. The answer you just said was wrong. Firstly to answer the question look for a number beside the bracket, that means that you are multiplying. So 4 times 3n equals 12n then you multiply 4 times 8 which equals 32. After that you take 2+ from earlier and add it with the others. So that means 2+12n+32equals 12n+34. 12n+34 is the real answer.


Bob:
Oh so that's how you do distributive property. Thanks Peter for helping me with my homework now I understand Combining like terms and Distributive property.

Little Girl: well, from what i know i think the answer is negative 6 n + 15.

Babysitter: okay, let's go through this first you would combined the like terms.

Little Girl: that would be n and negative 5 n in brackets and three and twelve in brackets.

Babysitter: good now only one thing can come out of both brackets, so what is n minus 5 n?

Little Girl: ummmm.... negative 4 n ?

Babysitter: good that's right, now what is three plus twelve?

Little Girl: well thats easy fifteen.

Babysitter: so the answer would be negetive 4 n plus fifteen. so the only thing you did wrong was you instead of taking away 5 n you took away 6 n from n.

Little Girl: Oh thanks.....now the second question is 2 + 4 then in brackets 3 n + 8 and i think the answer is 12 n + 10.

Babysitter: this one is a little different first you have to add 2 and 4

Little Girl: that's 6

Babysitter: okay now we go 6 times 3 n

Little Girl: ummm....... 18 n

Babysitter: now what is 6 times 8?

Little Girl: that's 48

Babysitter: okay, so the answer is 18 n + 48

Little Girl: oh well, that is much easier then i thought thanks I'll go do my home work now

1 person - no , it couldnt be . the quetion says n+3-5n+12 . the question says you owe -5n and you have n . which mean your answer would be -4n +15 . and you always add the opposite .

2 person - oh , really . i thought you were supossed to make the minus to a plus and leave the question as it is .

1 person - NO , you turn the minus into a plus . and you add the opposite .

2 person - Oh , thanks for the help.

1 person - well now that you know how to add the opposite , let see if you can do this second problem .

1 person - for example , 2 + 4(3n+8) .

2 person - Uhm , i think i know the answer .

1 person - Go ahead , answer the question .

2 person - Okay , i think the answer is ... 12n + 10 .

1 person - You were almost right , all you forgot is you dont add all of them together .
you combine your like terms , you put them into the same basket and you add them together.
so your answer should have been 14 + 3n
