Hey guys well today Mr.H explained to us a project we have to do. This project is for Language Arts, Social Studies, Math, and Science. You have to make a two minute video about change. You can choose whatever you would like to see change in. It is due by April. So don't wait until the last minute use the two months you have! Choose a group by the end of this week. The limit of people per group is four. It is a competition so do a good job!


Now back to math. Today we started doing two step equations. Write this equation on the inside of the yellow flap in the bottom left corner:

This part will be written on the bottom left green flap. Now first what you want to do is get rid of the constant. It will look like this:
Next you have to isolate the variable. It will look like this:

The last step is to verify.


Now we have to do algebra tiles. You have to write this on the bottom right side in green.

Pay It Forward


For mine and Charissa's pay it forward we went over to Magnis Ellice Recreation Centre(M.E.R.C), an inner city community centre. We took some brownies that we baked and handed them out to the little kids there, and the staff. They smiled and thanked us for the brownies. They were so good they all wanted more! (were good bakers :D ) We explained to one of the staff members why we were there and then she explained to the kids what we were doing. She told them that after getting the brownies they were to do something nice for someone else. We hope that they follow what was said.

Chapter Two

Jimmy: Hey Sue, how are you today?
Sue: I am great!
Sue: I have a question for you
Jimmy: Shoot
Sue: Okay well its two questions from my math homework. I think I know the answers but I'm not to sure if they are right.The first question is n+3-5n+12 the answer I got for it was -6n+15. Is that correct?
Jimmy: Actually Sue that is the wrong answer. I'll show you how to get the right one. Well first you have to group the alike terms. So it would look like this n-5n+3+12. Then what you want to do is figure it out so the simplification would be -4n+15.
Sue: Oh I see how you got that!
Sue: Now for the next question. 2 + 4(3n+8). I think the answer is 12n + 10. Now that must be right.
Jimmy: No I'm sorry Sue that isn't right. I'll explain it again. This is called distributive property. First you have to multiply 3n by 4 and then 8 by 4. That gives you 2+12n+32. Next you have to group the alike terms. So it would look like this 12n+32+2. Finally figure what every thing equals put together and the simplification would be 12n+34.

Chapter Three



What I did first was I isolated the variable. I did this by dividing 3n by 3. To balance i had to do the same to the other side. That left me with n=2. The last step is to verify.



For this question I again started with the variable. I did this by subtracting five on both sides which also created balance. The answer i got was x=8. Then i ended with verifying.








I started off with isolating the variable. I did this by multiplying 7n by 7. I did the same thing to the other side. What I was left with was n=14. I then verified.








For this equation I started with isolating the variable. I did this by adding 11 to q-11. For balance I had to do the same thing on the other side. This left me with q=19. To finish it off I verified.

Hey guys! Sorry about the late scribe post. I will fill you guys in on what we did Nov 17 and 19.

On Nov 17th we had a substitute. We got to hear from Mr.H on how to group integer questions. There are two different ways.

Here is the first method:
In this method you group just the integers. Remember only one integer can come out of each group. And also you have to bring down the - or + sign.

Here is the second method:

In this method you group the integers with the - or +. Like I said before only one integer can come out of each group. This method is alot easier and looks better than having brackets.


On Nov 19th we moved onto dividing integers. We only got up to completing the ++ quadrant and starting the - + quadrant in our blue and white booklet.

There are three different ways you can write the division question.

Integer Tiles
Integer tiles are used to figure out the answer for adding and subtracting integers. Here is an example:

(-8) + (+2)= ?

Since there is -6 left over that is the answer.
Subtracting Integers
We do not subtract integers we add the opposite. Here is an example:
(-8) - (+2) = ?
When changing it to adding you have to make the second number opposite of what it already is
(-8) + (-2) = -10
Another Example:
(+2) - (+4) = ?
The positive four changed into a negative four
(+2) + (-4) = -2

Once upon a time lived a little elf named Chancy. All of the other elves would always make fun of him. They made fun of him because he did not have a magical elf power. The other elves were able to read minds, steal cookies, and fly. The only thing that Chancy could do was math.

He was skipping through the forest when he came upon two squirrels arguing. One squirrel was saying "You owe me three nuts!" The other squirrel was saying "No I only owe you two!" So Chancy went up to them to help them with their problem. He said to them "How many nuts did you give him?" "I gave him four nuts." So then he should be owing you four nuts back. You still owe him two more nuts. Chancy then continued his journey through the forest.




He got tired of skipping and decided to take a rest. While he was resting he fell asleep on an enchanted mushroom. If you fell asleep on it, it would make you dream of integers. So, Chancy was dreaming. In his dream was an integer question. The question was (-8) + (+2). Chancy figured out that the question equaled out to -6.





Chancy all of the sudden was woken up. He was woken up by Fredward the integer blowing dragon. Fredward was trying to warn Chancy that the mushroom would make his brain explode with integer questions. But since Fredward couldn't blow fire he blew an integer question at Chancy to wake him up. The question was (+7) + (-15). The question immediately woke Chancy up. Once Chancy woke up he answered the question. "The answer of your integer question is -8" yelled Chancy. "You are correct" said Fredward. Chancy then once again continued through the forest.


What he saw next shocked him. Humans were cutting down trees from the forest. He went up to them and said "What are you doing!?" One of the workers replied "Don't worry we plant back a new tree for each tree we've cut down." Chancy thought in his head. They've cut down 8 trees but only planted 5 back. "You guys have your math wrong, you see (-8) + (+5)= -3 you still need to plant 3 more trees" stated Chancy. "Oh okay thank you for helping us out" said the workers.

He then came to an opening in the forest. There was nothing around but one thing. That one thing was an integer question. But this integer question was not like any that he had ever done. It involved subtraction. The question was (-8) - (+3)= ? Chancy thought and thought...and finally came up with the solution. You never subtract you add the opposite. So instead of the question being (-8) - (+3) he changed it to (-8) + (-3)= -11!
So he continued on his walk yet again. While he was walking he got thirsty and stopped at a river. There was an evil giant frog at the river. He said "You have to answer an integer question to get a drink of water, the question is
(+3)+(-9)-(+2)= ?" So chancy remembered to add the opposite. He changed the question to (+3) + (-9) + (+2)= -4. "The answer is -4," said Chancy. The frog said "That is correct you may get a drink of water." Chancy got a drink of water and left on his walk.
Chancy was finally done with his walk through the forest. He then realized that his magical elf power was figuring out integer problems. He was so thrilled that he told every elf that made fun of him. The elves never made fun of Chancy again.

Mean
The mean is the average of a data set. To find it you have to add up all of the numbers in a data set and divide them by how many numbers there are.
Median
The median is the middle number in a data set. You have to put all of the numbers in ascending order then delete out all the numbers two by two starting from the outside going inwards until you hit the middle.

The mode is the most repeated number in a data set. To find it just put the numbers in ascending (this makes it easier on you) then look for the number which is there the most.


Range
The range is the difference between the highest and the lowest number in a data set. To find it you put the numbers in ascending order and subtract the lowest number from the highest number.
