Hello there, 9-05! Today we started on Chapter 10 which is Circle Geometry. We went straight to 10.1 and started learning or reviewing about circles since I'm sure most of us know something about circles. Chapter 10.1 is about Exploring Angles in a Circle. For this class, we spent our time taking down notes and Mr. B taught us how to find angles.
Circumference - The boundary of or distance around a circle.
Diameter - The distance across a circle through its centre.
Radius - A line segment joining the centre of a circle to the outside edge.






The angles ABC is called a Central Angle.
Central Angle - An angle form by two radii of a circle.
The straight yellow line from A to C is called a chord.
Chord - A line segment joining two points on the circumference of a circle.



Angles ADC and AEC are examples of Subtended Angles.
Subtended Angle: Lying opposite to.
Inscribed Subtended Angle: is equal to half the central triangle.

How do you find the measurement from B to C? Use Pythagoras!
First of all, why do we use Pythagoras? We can use Pythagoras method as long as there is a right triangle to find out the missing side length. Do you see the right triangle? If you flip it over or turn your head upside down, you will be able to see a right triangle. So, the angles AC will be represented as the hypotenuse which is c. And let's say that AB represents a and BC represents b.
a^2+b^2 = c^2
6^2+b^2 = 10^2
36+b^2 = 100
b^2 = 100-36
b^2 = 64
Square root b^2 = Square root 64
b = 8
The missing measurement of the line B to C is 8 cm.

Questions 9 to 12

The distance to Grandma's house is 4/5 of the distance to Uncle Glen's. If Uncle Glen's house is
3 1/2 hours away, how long will it take to get to Grandma's house if you travel at the same speed?

To multiply fractions, it would be way easier if there was no whole number. Let's turn 3 1/2 in to an improper fraction. To do this, you multiply the denominator by the whole number and add the numerator.
3 x 2 + 1 = 7

Now we have 4/5 x 7/2. Now we multiply the numerator then the denominator.
4 x 7 = 28
5 x 2 = 10
Now we have 28/10 as an answer. We then simplify the answer. 28/10 = 2 and 8/10. We can even simplify this more to 2 and 1/4.

Now we know that it will take 2 and 1/4 hours to reach Grandma's house.

It takes 3/5 of a tank of gas to get to work and back each day. How much gas is used over 5 work days?

In each 5 days, 3/5 is used. So all you have to do is multiply the numerator by 5.
5 x 3 = 15.
15/5 or 3 tanks
In five days it takes 3 tanks of gas to get to work.

Owen is 2 1/4 times as old as Robin. When Robin celebrates his 8th b-day, how will old Owen be?

8 x 2 1/4 is the basic question. Again we should not multiply mixed fractions, so we convert.
2 x 4 + 1 = 9
The question becomes: 8 x 9/4

*When we have a whole number being multiplied to a fraction, all you have to do is multiply the whole by the numerator and use the same denominator.*

72/4 is what it will become but now we have to simplify. Both numerator are even so the can be divided by two.
36/2 again they are both even.
18/1 is the most simple form possible. It's basically just 18.
Owen will then be 18 when Robin becomes 8.

The Karate club is arranging a grading for its members. It takes 3 1/4 hours to test a group of 4 candidates. How long will the club need the gym in order to process 3 groups of 4 candidates each?

The question is basically asking: 3 x 3 1/4.

39/4
9 and 3/4

I got lazy and didn't show my work so I hope you figured out what I did. If not, check out the other question i did.

It will take 9 and 45 minutes to test 3 groups of 4 candidates each.

Today in class we were disscussing what was the answer to this question.
Which lot more hard top?
Carol Gardens
3/4 of the lot will be playground for children.
2/5 of the playground will be hardtop for basketball.

Flatbush
2/5 of the lot will be playground for children.
3/4 of the playground will be hardtop for basketball.
The width is 100 meters and the length is 50 meters.
(both lots are the same size)
Draw a picture that shows the two lots to figure out the answer.
Carol Gardens
The pink shows how much playground is in carol gardens. This is 3/4 of the lot.

Now, we have to divide the playground (the pink) into fifths in order to get the answer. Once you cut 3/4 into fifths there would be 20 pieces but fifteen of the pieces is playground. We then have to change the denominator of 5 into a denominator of 15 so we could know how many squares to colour in. So, 2/5 times the bottom to 20 is 3. What you do to the top you do to the bottom so 2x3=6. So that means you have to colour in 6 out of 15 squares.





Flatbush
The blue part of this picture is how big is the playground in the lot. It is 2/5 of the lot.


We have to divide the playground (the blue) into fourths in order to get the answer. Cut 2/5 into fourths there would be 20 pieces but eight of the pieces is playground. We then have to change the denominator of 4 into a denominator of 8 so we could know how many squares to colour in. So, 3/4 times the bottom to 20 is 3. What you do to the top you do to the bottom so 3x2=6. So that means you have to colour in 6 out of 8 squares.



From the two pictures you could see that both of the hardtops are equivalent. They both make a fraction of 6/20. So, the answer is the Carol Gardens and the Flatbush have the same amount of hardtop on their playgrounds.

Today in class we were talking about square roots.




What is a square root?



We had to use pictures, words and numbers to explain.



A square number is finding a root of a number that is squared.

Pay It Forward

For this pay it forward project, there were lots of things I wanted to do, but I didn't get to do them. One of them were making brownies and giving them to the Children's Hospital. I was going to do that with a couple of friends but never got the chance to. So instead, my act of kindness was to shovel my front yard. I did this because I wanted to do something for my family so they wouldn't have to do it. I also gave out thank you cards and happy holiday cards. I did this because I wanted to thank the people that have helped me throughout the year and maybe even longer than that. I gave some of the cards when there was a get together. I had eighteen cards but all of them were not given all on the same day. Each card had the word 'thank you' in big words on the side and in each card, I listed all the things that I wanted to thank them about.

Well, I never got any pictures of myself shoveling because there was no one there to take a picture of me, so to show that I did do my project, I took a picture of the snow before I shoveled it and took a picture when i was done shoveling.



These are some of the cards and what they look like .

When I was writing the cards I was really looking forward in giving them. When I shoveled and gave out the cards, I felt so happy because I did a good thing. It just made me feel like a good person and I was proud of myself for being responsible of making someone smile. Also, I have realized that I should be really thankful because there are alot of things people do for me that I do not realize and it got me a chance to thank them. Just like when I gave out the cards to people the look on their faces made me smile. They were surprised because they never expected it. In every card that I made, I wrote "Pay it Forward" and wrote a little about what Pay it Forward was. I hope that the people will do the same as I did and do something nice for someone else.

I think that ONE person could always make a difference because there are lots of people in this world, but all you need is to help one person and if you helped that one person they would pass that on and help other people. Its just like saving a life, would it make a difference to save one person's life? Of course it would. If you helped more than one person that would even be better. The more we help out each other the more smiles and happiness you see. One person means a whole lot, so if you helped one person it would make a big difference because theres always room for more happy faces in this world. ONE PERSON MAKES A HUGE DIFFERENCE IN LIFE!

Rule for multiplying

This is how you do the Pratt's Integer Law,
Follow it and you won't make any flaws,
Multiplying even amounts of negative integers is very easy,
But sometimes it can make you queasy,
The product is always positive right?
Don't worry numbers don't bite!
Lets move on to odd amounts of negative integers okay?
And also lets keep it my way,
The product will always be a negative get it?
There is one more thing I have to admit,
Both cannot work if its a zero group,
So, it's okay lets hear a big "whoop",

Chapter Two

Edward Cullen: Hi Bella!
Isabella Swan: Hi Edward! I have a question.
Edward Cullen: Okay, What is your question Bella?
Isabella Swan: Do you know anything about combining like terms?
Edward Cullen: Why, yes i do.
Isabella Swan: Do you know how to answer n+3-5n+12?
Edward Cullen: Well , you have to add the n+-5n which makes -4n and 3+12 equals 15. So, the answer is -4n+15.
Isabella Swan: What? I thought it was 6n+15?
Edward Cullen: Oh, I know what you are doing wrong, you are adding the n to -4. You can't add negative and positive integers together so you have to cancel it. Thats why it is -4n+15.
Isabella Swan: Oh... I got another question. But this if for Distributive Property. Do you know how to do Distributive Property?
Edward Cullen: Yeah, I do. Sort of.
Isabella Swan: Awesome, how do you do 2 + 4(3n+8)?
Edward Cullen: Well, you have to multiply 2 times 3n that makes 6n, then you multiply 2 by 8 and equals 16. Then you have to bring down the four, 6n+16+4. Now simply it 6n+20.
Isabella Swan: HAHA , sorry but that is incorrect.
Edward Cullen: NO! It is right, i am always right.
Isabella Swan: No, your wrong.
Edward Cullen: What did I do wrong?
Isabella Swan: You multiplied it wrong, you are supposed to multiply the 4 not the 2. So, this is how you do it. 4 times 3n equals 12n and 4 times 8 equals 32. You now bring down the 2. It is 2+12n+32, now you can simplify. The answer is 34+12n.
Edward Cullen: Aw, SHUCKS! I was so close, thanks for telling me how.
Isabella Swan: No problem.
Edward Cullen: Well, I have to go now.
Isabella Swan: Oh okay, bye Edward!
Edward Cullen: Bye Bella!












Chapter Three

Divison:




You have to Isolate the the variable by itself so you have to times each side by 3. Then it equals to -n=18. Your variable cannot be a negative so you times each side by -1 because the negative on the variable is actually just a -1. The result is then n=-18. Everytime you solve a question you have to verify.

Additive:

For this question, you also have to isolate the variable. Being able to do that, you have to add -33 to each side of the equation. That equals to 27=n, you then have to verify to check if your answer is correct.

Multiplicative:

On this question you have to also isolate the variable. So, you divide the 15 on both side. The answer to (n) is 12. PLEASE verify to check.

Subtractive:

This is a subtractive question, you first have to change the "uh-ohs" into positives. Then you write out the question adding the -8 to each side. The variable is -14. Verify to check.

Today in class, the first thing we did was review the homework questions we had from yesterday. Then we looked at the Make a rule homework, and we were trying to figure out the pattern of it. We then found the rule.

This is what the paper looked like:The rule is called the Pratt's Integer Law (:
- When you multply an EVEN amount of negative integers the product is always positive.
- When you multiply an ODD amount of negative integers the product is always negative.
After, Mr. Harbeck let us have time to do our homework. He told us to do questions 13-18. These are a few examples on what your supposed to do. Your are supposed to solve your questions by grouping them together to make the question with only two integers so it is easier to solve.

Lissa's Integer Story

Once upon a time, there was a beautiful princess named Issa. She lived in a tall beautiful castle. But there was only one problem with this perfect place, she was very lonely. Though, the place was filled with things to entertain her and food so she wont starve, she was trapped in this place until a prince comes and saves her from the lonely castle. One early morning, the clumsy princess fell off her bed when she was sleeping. She got off the floor and went to brush her teeth and wash her face. When she went to get breakfast, she got her number cereal, and some milk. She put some cereal in the milk and there she saw a problem. Issa tried solving this with algebra tiles.


























Issa smiled happily when she got it right. When she was done eating, she didn’t know what to do. All the things that were in the castle got boring to play with, especially if you are only playing by yourself. But all of a sudden she saw a small box, it was like a jewelry box, but it was brown. She took it into her hands and stared at the front of the box for a moment. It was an unfamiliar box with weird writing on it. When she opened the box, there was a bright glow, but after a second, it seemed to darken. There was a piece of paper in the box, she took it out and read it. This time, Issa tried to solve with a number line.

















After, solving the question in the box, she got really bored, so Issa went to the small window of the castle and just stared outside of the castle, at all the beautiful things, hoping that one day she could get out and have fun outside. She was so lonely she would play with anybody, even an animal perhaps. All of a sudden, she heard someone walking nearby the castle. When she looked down she saw a handsome young prince about her age just wondering around. She yelled hello and asked him why he was here. He replied “I’m coming to save you miss.” When he looks at the castle, he saw that it was really big and it had two doors to get in. He randomly picked one of them and opened it. It was locked, but on the door there was a question you had to answer. Joe decided to use money to solve this problem.











When he answered the question, the door magically opened and said “Correct!” Once the door was open, he took a step inside and looked all around, it led to nothing. He was so confused, there was nothing there, only a dark space. He went out and stared at the door again in confusion. “Um, try the other door, I think it might work. By the way, what is your name?” said Issa from high up in the tower. “Why, my name is Joe, what is yours?” Joe replied, trying to sound manly. “My name is Issa.” Issa said. So, Joe went and pulled the other door open. This door also had a question you had to answer. Joe thought that it would be easier this time if he just used ordinary standard math.














Then the door opened and when he stepped inside there were 2 different staircases to choose. Joe felt so confused, why were there so much different ways to go? First, he stood there deciding which way to go, he was too lazy to walk all those stairs. So, Joe decided to pick the stairway that was the shortest. Joe walked all the way up until there was a door in front of him. It was a gray big door with a big blue knob. The door creaked open when he opened it and all of a sudden, out popped an integer question.











Then, the door said “Correct!” and so went into the room. When he went in, he smelled something really good, and it made him hungry. The smell led him to a room full of wonderful food. “Excuse me? Where am I?” he asked anyone who was there. The wall answered “Your in the kitchen.” “Oh, Where is Princess Issa’s room? Asked Joe politely. “Her room, is in the other door, you went to the wrong door” said the wall. Joe said thank you and hurriedly went out of the room and ran down the stairs. He went to the other flight of stairs and it took him a while to get to the door. This door was bright purple and had a pink doorknob. He opened the door and there popped another integer question.














He opened up the door and there staring out the window hopelessly was Princess Issa. "Princess Issa, I'm here to free you out of this lonely place" says Joe. "Oh, thank you Prince Joe, I am so glad you saved me." Together, they left the beautiful castle and went to live where Prince Joe lived.

In the beginning of class today, we were talking about the number of printing paper, we would have in one day and worked through a whole bunch of question. The last question was, how many trailers would there be to get all the paper we need in one month?

Here are the information. I'll help you go through this problem.
- 4 000 0000 in one month ( 25 days)
-1
60 000 in one day
- 5000 boxes all together

- 32 boxes for 160 000


Now, ill show you how to get this information.
- to find how many paper we used in one day we have to do this:
4 000 000 (in one month) / 25 (days) = 160 000 (in one day)
-to find the 32 boxes we have to do this:
160 000(in one day) /5000(boxes) = 32 boxes
AND finally, this is how you find how many trailers you need:
32 (boxes) x 25 (days) / 250 (trailers) = 3.2 trailers
Then you just round that off to a whole number.
3 trailers !

After we have done that, we did the gum ball machines sheet.


























We answered the questions 3, 4, 5 in class, and the rest was for homework.
Question number 3: you have to use tallies
Question number 5: you have to use numbers, eg. 5
Question number 6 : you have to use fractions out of a hundred , eg. 5/100
Question number 7 : you have to use percents, eg. 7%
Question number 8: you have to change the number like into percents %





This what we did in question number 3 .
My group and I drew out 10 gumballs. This is our result:







In question number 4 you just write why your predictions were right or wrong. EXPLAIN .
For example :

My predictions were not very close because I thought that it would be the blue gum balls that would be the most picked out, because the blue has the most gum balls.

In question number 5 , we had to draw out 100 gum balls and this is what my group got:






This is what you do for question 6.





In question 7, you just have to convert the answers for question 6 to percents.



In question 8, put your percents on the number line





So , now you could see, there is more possibility for the gum ball to be blue than it is to be red.
Sorry if this is hard to understand, I tried to explain it well .

  • First order the data in ascending order.
  • Then add up all the data.
  • Then divide it by the number of pieces of data you have.














Median

  • First order the data in ascending order.
  • Then you look for the number in the middle.
  • If there are two numbers in the middle add them up and divide them by 2.

  • First you order the data in ascending order.
  • Then you look at which numbers appears the most.

  • Then subtract the smallest data from the largest data.
